PMCCP Winter Holiday Drive Successful !

Posted January 2021

Every year, PMCCP continues an annual tradition that matches generous donor groups with wish lists from families in need. While this year has been tumultuous for many, our annual Winter Gift Drive was nothing short of amazing. In addition to fulfilling items from family wish lists, many donors also contributed books and classroom materials.

We would like to offer a special thank you to Lesa Valenzuela, who just celebrated her 20-year anniversary and has organized the Winter Gift Drive each year since beginning her work at PMCCP. Lesa has described the Gift Drive as a labor of love--"The Winter Gift Drive has always been such a joyful program to coordinate, but this year has been especially heartwarming.". Thank you Lesa for your continued hard work and dedication to supporting countless families and children over the years!

In addition, this year our community received support from the Pike Market Foundation's Annual Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree is a festive drive that supports wishes made by seniors, preschools, and residents of the Market Community. We are very grateful for the Market Foundation's continued support and assistance. We thank everyone from the Market Foundation and the Market Commons for their ongoing, dedicated commitment and support for the Market community.

Lastly, to all the donors who have given so generously this year, we are extremely grateful for your continued financial assistance this past year. Thanks to your continuing support, we have raised $32,000 towards tuition assistance. Together, we are prioritizing family stability and continuity of care in these unsteady times.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

Worthy Wage Day School Closure

School will be closed Tuesday, May 1st in honor of Worthy Wage Day

What is Worthy Wage Day?

The Worthy Wage Campaign is an ongoing effort to help the childcare workforce build alliances with parents and others to educate our nation about the need for more resources for early care and education.   The campaign is built on the belief that fair and decent employment for early childhood educators must be the cornerstone of affordable, high-quality services for children and families.   The most important predictor of quality in childcare centers is staff wages.   The ultimate goal of the Worthy Wage Campaign is to promote the vision of a revamped and fully-funded national childcare system, one that recognizes the essential link between the needs of all three childcare constituencies: parents, children and teachers.

Why Do We Close on Worthy Wage Day?

Pike Market Child Care & Preschool has been committed to the goals of the Worthy Wage Campaign since our inception in 1982. We believe that a respected and fairly compensated staff is an integral part of providing consistent, high quality care. However, meeting these goals takes great effort in a society which undervalues our work and which provides scanty support systems for families.

The largest budget item for a childcare center is staff wages. Often, to keep childcare affordable for parents, staff wages are kept low.   Effectively, teachers “subsidize” the cost of childcare, earning low wages and often, using personal hours to prepare for their classroom work. This contributes to high rates of burn-out and turnover. Unfortunately, this is occurring in a field which attends to children in their most important formative years. This is not the time to be cutting costs and compromising quality, but most parents cannot afford quality care otherwise.

Join Us In Supporting Our Teachers!

In the face of such odds, we rely upon the support of our community to make our work at Pike Market Child Care and Preschool possible.

Please join us as we work to expand the scope of our efforts. Please alert our public policy makers of your concern for children and families. Advocacy for worthy wages helps build respect for childcare workers which helps ensure the quality of care for families. It is in all our best interests to work to improve the quality of services for children, families and educators everywhere.

Thank You North American Reggio Emilia Alliance!

Posted March 2018

On March 24th, PMCCP welcomed more than 80 educators from across the country as part of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance. The group is committed to the values and principles of the Reggio Emilia approach to early education which emphasizes the individuality and capabilities of each child.

Reggio-inspired work values the environment as a teacher focuses on studying children to inform the curriculum in tandem with provocations offered by teachers. Among the educators who visited our school, there was overwhelming feedback from the participants that they felt our school was special, beautiful and inspiring, as you can see by the photos.
